Different Facial Piercings With Pictures
I'm a huge piercing enthusiast, and I am a huge proponent of safe body art.
So you're thinking of getting a facial piercing? You've come to the right place to check out your options—there are a ton!
But before we get to the fun stuff (pictures and ideas), I want to issue a couple pieces of advice: Do your research before choosing your piercer. Make sure you choose a good one who will advise you about the best places to pierce. After all, this is your face! You don't want to end up with massive infections or a piercing you aren't happy with.
There are professional associations for piercers, which can be a good place to start your search.
Here's a sneak peek of what piercings I'll be covering in this article:
- Jestrum (Top-Middle Lip)
- Ashley
- Nasallang
- Uvula
- Tongue Web
- Nick Piercing
- Horizontal Tongue
- Chin
- Austin Bar
- Bridge
- Venom Bites
- Tongue
- Nose
- Septum
- Eyebrow
- Eyelid
- Horizontal Labret
- Medusa
- Spider Bites
- Angel Bites
- Snakebites
- Monroe/Madonna
- Smiley
- Frowny
- Lower Lip
- Cheek
1. Jestrum (Top-Middle Lip)
A jestrum is a piercing through the upper lip. It's similar to a vertical labret, which goes vertically through the lower lip.
Recommended jewelry: Curved barbell
Healing time: Eight to ten weeks
2. Ashley
The Ashley, or the inverse vertical labret, enters through the inside of the lower lip and rests in the center of the lip.
Recommended jewelry: Curved barbell
Healing time: Three to twelve months
3. Nasallang
A nasallang uses a piece of jewelry (usually a barbell) to join three piercings: one nostril, the septum, and the second nostril. The effect can look like a simple double nostril piercing that lies flush with the skin.
Recommended jewelry: Nasallang industrial barbell
Healing time: Four to six months

4. Uvula
As you see in the photo, the uvula is the little fleshy thing that dangles at the back of your throat. What a cool, secret place for a piercing.
The uvula piercing is cool but difficult for obvious reasons. When was the last time you stuck something near the back of your throat without gagging? I thought so. It's hard not to gag, so it's hard to pierce a uvula.
Recommended jewelry: Captive bead
Healing time: Less than two weeks
5. Tongue Web
Your tongue web is also called your frenulum. This little piece of tissue is pretty easy to pierce. Some people, however, don't have enough tissue there to pierce, so ask your piercer if your frenulum is big enough.
Recommended jewelry: Curved barbell, horseshoe, or ball closure ring
Healing time: One to two months
6. Nick Piercing
Nick piercings get their name from the Seattle piercer Nick Anzalone. They start at the highest point inside the mouth and exit underneath the orbital of the eye. They start at one of the highest point inside the mouth and
Recommended jewelry: Custom-made L-shaped bar
7. Horizontal Tongue
The tongue is a muscle, so piercing all the way through vertically is not easy. People who get vertical tongue piercings do report some slurred speech, lisping, long healing periods, and lots of pain. They end up, however, with an incredibly unique and cool piercing.
Recommended jewelry: Straight barbell
Healing time: One to two months
8. Chin
A chin piercing is a type of labret, which means lip in Latin. The piercing enters at a low point inside the mouth below the lower lip and exits just above the chin.
Labret piercings were traditional among American Northwest Coast Indians.
Recommended jewelry: Labret stud
Healing time: One to three months
9. Austin Bar
Austin bar piercings are horizontal piercings that go through the tip of the nose tissue but do not travel through the septum.
Recommended jewelry: Barbell
Healing time: Two to three months
10. Bridge
Also known as an "Erl" or an "Earl" piercing, the bridge goes through the skin between the eyes. It is a surface piercing, so there can be a higher risk of rejection and scarring.
Recommended jewelry: Straight barbell
Healing time: Two to three months
11. Venom Bites
Venom bites travel through the tongue tissue on either side of the two main blood vessels.
Recommended jewelry: Tongue barbells
Healing time: Two to three months
12. Tongue
The mouth is the fastest part of the body to heal, so tongue piercings tend to heal up pretty quickly. A traditional tongue piercing will go straight through the tongue tissue, avoiding the frenulum.
Recommended jewelry: Straight barbell or captive bead ring
Healing time: Four to six weeks
13. Nose
Nose piercings are common, so it may come as a surprise that nose piercings take quite a long time to heal. Nose piercings go through cartilage, not flesh, which heals differently. Nose piercings are the most common facial piercing, after earlobes, with nostril piercings in first place as the most popular type of nose piercing.
Recommended jewelry: Loop, stud with L-bar closure, stud with ball closure, or stud with flat backing
Healing time: Four to six months
14. Septum
The septum is the wall of cartilage that divides the nostrils. Generally, the cartilage itself is not pierced, but rather the small gap between the cartilage and the bottom of the nose (sometimes called the "sweet spot").
Recommended jewelry: Nose ring
Healing time: Six to eight months
15. Eyebrow
An eyebrow piercing is a surface piercing that enters just below the eyebrow and exits just above the eyebrow.
Recommended jewelry: Curved barbell, captive bead ring
Healing time: Six to eight weeks
16. Eyelid
Eyelid piercings are usually located in the outside corner of the eye. They are rare because the risks for infection and swelling are high.
Recommended jewelry: Captive bead ring
17. Horizontal Labret
Horizontal labret piercings are a double piercing of the lower lip that may appear from the outside to be one single horizontal bar on the inside. They are actually two studs positioned in a horizontal line.
Recommended jewelry: Labret stud
Healing time: Two to three months
18. Medusa
Medusa piercings can be quite sexy. They are generally done with labret studs and are located in the philtrum, the small indentation between the septum and the upper lip.
Recommended jewelry: Labret stud
Healing time: Six months
19. Spider Bites
Snake bites are a double piercing near the corner of the lower lip with rings as jewelry. The rings are spaced close together. A placement slightly further apart would make the piercing a vampire bite piercing.
Recommended jewelry: Labret rings
Healing time: One to three months
20. Angel Bites
There are several lip piercings that are called "bites." Angel bites are spaced far apart above the upper lip. A double piercing below the lower lip is a snake bite piercing (see photo below.) A combination of angel bites and snake bites (four piercings) is called canine bites.
Recommended jewelry: Labret studs
Healing time: One to three months
21. Snakebites
Like angel bites, snake bites are located near the lip. Snake bites enter the skin just below the lower lip. A combination of angel bites and snake bites (four piercings) is called canine bites.
Recommended jewelry: Labret studs
Healing time: One to three months
22. Monroe/Madonna
A Monroe or Madonna piercing is off center above the upper lip. It is intended to look like a beauty mark and is usually on the left side of the face.
Recommended jewelry: Labret stud with ball or gem on outer end
Healing time: 8 to 12 weeks
23. Smiley
A smiley is an oral piercing of the upper frenulum, or web between the inner upper lip and the gums.
Recommended jewelry: Small-gauge captive bead ring or horseshoe barbell
Healing time: 4 to 12 weeks
24. Frowny
A frowny is the opposite of a smiley. It is a piercing of the lower frenulum, or web, between the inner lower lip and gums.
Recommended jewelry: Small-gauge captive bead ring or horseshoe barbell
Healing time: 4 to 12 weeks
25. Lower Lip
A lip piercing is a piercing of the skin just below the lower lip through to the skin inside the mouth.
Recommended jewelry: Captive bead ring
Healing time: One to three months
26. Cheek
A cheek piercing enters through the cheek from inside the mouth. Generally the piercings are placed symmetrically on both cheeks, imitating or penetrating dimples.
Recommended jewelry: Labret stud
Healing time: 6 to 12 months

I really want the lower lip piercing. But, im in band. I really, Really want it. But it may affect my playing and im a very serious trumpet player. Idk if i should just do it and see how it goes. I have wanted this damn piercing for three years and i only brought it up to my mother a few months back and she basically said "Okay, but look up how it affects your playing. I understand you like it and want it, but there are consequenses.." she basivally went into a large rant about how it coupd get infected.. i promised that if i got one, i would clean it sevral times a day. I am passionate about this, but im scared for band.

Well, I've actually got two labret piercings (think David Drahman from disturbed (I probably messed up his name too)) I can't tell you how many people have asked me if they were snake bites. As Marcella says, they're useless! I wouldn't say tasteless because to each their own. I love mine, but always consider what you're doing ahead of time. People have told me my labret piercings make me look (more) frightening/badass. Mission accomplished, but you pay a price. Mine snag on everything. It's a minor inconvenience so I don't mind, but I still wish I had considered that first. (My piercings while thought out were still semi-impulsive. I was supposed to be getting a tattoo but my artist wasn't in, so I got piercings.)
Marcella on May 24, 2017:
A lot of the piercings are tasteless also useless. I have the Monroe and the bottom right lip pierced. By the way the Madusa does not effect your teeth. It actually sits on the gum. Tip: If you'd like to get something done have the confidence to get it for you.

i want them all
